(29 Oct) A Mighty Heart (2007, Michael Winterbottom) 55
[ This is about the kidnapping and murder of Daniel Pearl, a Jewish-American New York Times journalist based in Pakistan, as experienced by his pregnant wife Mariane, also a journalist. The whole thing is well put together, with lots of locale flavour, and Angelina Jolie does fine work (as do Dan Futterman, Archie Panjabi, Will Patton and others), but I don’t know… Maybe this is the problem with true stories as opposed to fiction, like how you know beforehand how things are going to end, there are no big twists and turns, this is just messy, frustrating life… Then again, “United 93”, for instance, made the docudrama thing work: was that just a more potent story, or is it about Greengrass being better at making real events gripping than Winterbottom? In any case, “A Mighty Heart” is still worth seeing, I guess, but it’s missing a certain something that would have made all it more than the sum of its parts. ]
