[ I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again: I like Tom Cruise. Heck, I love the guy, and I enjoyed watching him play the Hollywood, almost comic-book version of a Nazi, eyepatch and all. Especially since, while it might seems at first that Bryan Singer and screenwriter Christopher McQuarrie are going for “Saving Private Ryan”-style Important Drama, it soon turns out that this is more of a pulpy conspiracy/men on a mission thriller. Of course, we know from History that said mission failed, but that creates another kind of suspense, as we’re constantly wondering when, where and how things will go wrong. “Valkyrie” is a slick, well-oiled machine, with the bonus advantage that, to paraphrase Soderbergh re: “The Limey”, its greatest special effects are the presence in the cast of such great actors as Kenneth Branagh, Bill Nighy, Tom Wilkinson, Christian Berkel and yes, Terence Stamp. ]
