(21 Oct) Filth and Wisdom (2008, Madonna) 13
[ Guy Ritchie might have put some of him in Madonna for a few years, but his filmmaking talent wasn't it. Not that the English director is a genius or anything, but he's certainly nowhere near as inept as his ex-wife proves to be here. Gogol Bordello's Eugene Hutz stars as a male dominatrix who doubles as Madonna's mouthpiece, addressing the audience directly to express the singer's life philosophy, which amounts to a bunch of platitudes about how one needs to embrace filth in order to achieve wisdom, or something to that effect. Also featuring Holly Weston as a stripper and Vicky McClure as a woman obsessed with saving African kids orphaned by AIDS, the movie is neither provocative or profound, and whatever inspiration Madonna got from «the films of Goddard [sic], Visconti, Passolini [sic] and Fellini» (as per her director's statement in the press notes), it doesn't show on screen. ]

(23 Oct) Cul-de-$ac (2008, Jib & Carlo) 25
[ I expected this to be a B-movie, but man!, this is some pretty cheap and botched nonsense! There's way too much pointless exposition and back-story, the visuals are unappealing, the editing is packed with AVID farts, the performances are rotten... There's some dumb fun to be found in the ninja action, gore and Serge Laprade scenery-chewing, but even those grow tiresome. ]
