(16 Feb) Before Tomorrow (2009, Marie-Hélène Cousineau & Madeline Piujuq) 80
[ This adaptation of Jorn Riel's novel "For Morgendaggen" takes place in 1840 amongst Inuit people, many of whom have yet to meet a single white man. All the same, rumor of their presence on the continent reaches them, as do some small objects and... disease. Visually magnificent and elevated by the superb score by Kate and Anna McGarrigle, the film also has a near-documentary quality, depicting the Inuit's lifestyle (fishing, hunting, etc.) with little to no dramatic interference. Even after dramatic events occur, "Before Tomorrow" remains a raw, visceral experience that's less about plot and dialogue (though some colourful stories are told in the great oral tradition) than about the sights and sounds surrounding the characters who, in a way, are not unlike the protagonists of a post-apocalyptic tale, witnessing not the end of the world, but certainly the end of theirs. ]
