[ Part romantic comedy, part sports drama, entirely generic, predictable, uninspired, dull and forgettable. I'm hardly a fan of Queen Latifah and her whole sassy homegirl thing, but I have to admit that her performance is the only thing that gives this movie a semblance of energy. She doesn't have much chemistry with Common, who plays her basketball player love interest, though. ]

(30 May) Whip It (2009, Drew Barrymore) 66
[ Last night, I went to see a Montreal Roller Derby League double-header, which reminded me that I still hadn't seen this movie. Now, this isn't the badass sexy hipster epic one could expect from a movie set in the world of contemporary roller derby. As directed by Drew Barrymore, it also lacks a true sense of style, comic timing and action choreography. What does work here is the simple, conventional but touching girl-power coming-of-age story at the heart of the movie, with Ellen Page's awkward, timid character learning to be more confident and assertive. It's kind of a more aggressive "Ice Princess", basically. You also gotta love the supporting cast, which includes Alia Shawkat, Kristen Wiig, Zoe Bell, Eve, Juliette Lewis and Barrymore herself, amongst others. ]
